From the Airport

Train, bus or taxi into Seoul — and which one is right for the bags you're carrying.

The short answer

Travelling light? Take the AREX all-stop train. Carrying suitcases? Take an airport limousine bus. A taxi costs several times either one and is no faster in traffic.

Your options from Incheon

Which one, honestly

One bag, hotel near a subway line — take the all-stop train. It is the cheapest and usually the fastest.
Two suitcases — take the bus. Dragging luggage through subway transfers is the classic first-day mistake: many stations have long corridors, and not every exit has a lift.
Landing late at night — the train will have stopped. Bus or taxi.
Three or four people together — a taxi split four ways stops looking expensive.

Before you leave the arrivals hall

Buy a T-money card at a convenience store and load some cash onto it.
Take out cash at an ATM — look for one marked 'Global' or 'Foreign card'.
Collect your SIM or activate your eSIM, if you arranged one.
Check which terminal you are in. Incheon's Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are a 15–20 minute shuttle apart, and buses to the city stop at both.

The last AREX train leaves well before midnight. If your flight lands late, plan on a bus or a taxi rather than discovering this at the platform.

Taking the bus

Look up your hotel in Naver Map first and note which bus number stops nearby — the routes are named after districts, not landmarks.
Buy a ticket at the counter in the arrivals hall, or just tap your T-money card as you board.
The stops are outside, on the pavement beyond the arrivals doors. Platform numbers are on overhead signs.
Tell the driver your stop as you board. They announce the big hotels, but it does no harm to be sure.

Gimpo Airport

Gimpo (GMP) handles domestic flights and some short-haul international ones, and it is much closer to the city. It sits on subway lines 5 and 9 as well as the AREX line, so from Gimpo the subway is almost always the right answer.

Going the other way

Leave an hour more than feels necessary. Traffic to Incheon is unpredictable, the airport is genuinely large, and the check-in and tax refund queues both take longer than you expect. If you are claiming a tax refund, that has to happen before you check your bags.
